About the 27th Letter

Picture

The Ampersand.

It might be one of the most iconic symbols used in the English language. It's elegant, interesting and kind of fun.

But where did it come from?
To save space, Roman scribes would link the e and the t in the word 'et,' which is the Latin word for 'and.' The symbol took on a shape very similar to an ampersand. The symbol continued to be used in the Old English alphabet and was carried forward into modern English.
So, our alphabet had 27 letters. [See where we are going with this?]
Up until the mid-1800s, children would say, " X, Y, Z and per se and." Per se is Latin for 'by itself.' Because of the way 'and per se and' sounded when said quickly, our favorite symbol became known as ampersand.

At 27th Letter, we don't just love the & symbol, we believe in what it represents. It says there is always something more to be done, a new route to try, another box to check, an exciting opportunity around the bend. & is our 27th letter and our business philosophy. We will never stop at Z. We will always look forward to what's next.
