Social Media Marketing (SMM) is built by building blocks we in the biz call “content.” There are two main types of content: Visual, photos and videos, and Text, articles and updates . It’s important to share your content with followers on social media channels, but if you’re new to the game you may be unsure which network is the right one for your business and what to share where.
(Not creating content yet? Say hi. We can help with that!)

Here’s our summary on the major Social Media networks and what to share on each.

LinkedIn
What to Share:
Text
Primary Uses: Professional Networking, Job Posting, Skill Endorsements
LinkedIn is geared toward professionals. It is a place for people to look for jobs, network and learn. LinkedIn has a built in publishing platform so it’s an ideal place to post blogs you have created. Use LinkedIn to share articles, ideas and thoughts from your company and employees.
Twitter
What to Share:
 Mostly Text
Primary Uses: Promote Blogs/Articles, Reach a Large Audience, Connect with Customers/Users
Twitter is very fast-paced and can be a excellent tool for reaching a wide audience, but you have to keep up. With a character limit of 140 per tweet, Twitter is designed for sharing quick tips, office happenings and quotes from articles. Share quotes from your blogs, articles you like and behind the scenes office quips. Focus on sharing mostly text and mix in images and videos once in awhile.
Instagram
What to Share:
 Text and Visual
Primary Uses: Post Photos, Build Brand Personality, Reach Younger Demographics, Share Visual Content on Facebook and Twitter
Instagram is one of the fastest growing social media platforms. On Instagram you can post photos or short videos with brief commentary. It is one of the easiest platforms to use and an excellent choice for those in a visual industry, but really we think all of our clients should be using it. There are other tools such as Overgram which allow you to turn a basic photo into a beautiful text and image piece to share.
Facebook
What to Share:
Text and Visual
Primary Uses: Build Following, Reach Large Audience, Share Company Updates
Facebook has the highest number of active users of any of the social networks. It allows you to build a loyal following and offers easy to use, affordable advertising opportunities. Facebook users are looking for entertaining and casually informative posts. Share your blog posts, images from Instagram, videos and keep your fans updated on your business. Share about 70% fun and interesting content with 30% sales/company oriented content. Posts with visual imagery or videos on Facebook perform better than those without.
Pinterest
What to Share:
 Visual
Primary Uses: Share Products, Increase Traffic, Build Brand Personality

Pinterest is another visual network. Think of it like a digital corkboard. It allows users to save or “pin” photos and links to sites from anywhere online. Each of the pins is tied to an image from the original source. Pinterest is a network made for retailers and online stores. By sharing your photos and products on Pinterest, you can increase traffic to your website (and hopefully sales). As a business, you can also create your own boards and save pins your followers can see, revealing the personality of your brand.
Google My Business
What to Share: Text and Visual
Primary Uses: Easy Audience Targeting, Improve SEO, Build Relationships

Google My Business is designed to target specific audiences. Their Circle and Community features make it easier to find the specific audience you are looking for. Google My Business is important for companies looking to promote a physical location such as a store or restaurant. By creating a Google page your business will show up on Google Maps, making it easier for customers to find you.
Social media helps engage your potential customers and is necessary to establish and build your brand. Start by picking one or two networks to focus on based on the type of content you create.
If you find you need helping managing your social media or creating content, say hi! We would love to help.
